A CT KUB should be requested within 24 hours of presentation of a patient with suspected renal calculi. It is the investigation of choice to confirm renal calculi and rule out hydronephrosis.

This requires immediate medical attention; onset tends to be over a few hours.
The patient will volunteer the diagnosis and be in discomfort or even pain.
There can be various causes including prostate hypertrophy, prostate cancer, constipation, UTIs, and medication (e.g. tricyclic antidepressants), or it can be idiopathic.
